The sound of bickering floated up to the battlements and Helga took a deep breath, drawing on every ounce of patience that she could muster.

Sal and Godric had been at it for days and Helga wasn't sure either of them remembered what they were fighting over any more. They both enjoyed the verbal sparring too much to care. She knew they weren't truly angry with each other, but the constant wrangling was getting on her nerves. Rowena had fled to her tower the day before, leaving Helga alone to mediate.

With another glance at the sun, which was sinking low on the horizon, Helga made up her mind. It was time to put a stop to this. The students would be returning in less than a fortnight, and they had decisions to make.

She descended the stairs, pausing once to knock on the door to Rowena's study.

"Ro, you're coming with me," she commanded. "This has to stop now."

Without waiting to see if her friend followed, Helga continued down to the Great Hall, where Salazar and Godric were currently engaged in round fifty-seven (or possibly fifty-eight) of their argument.

"That. Is. ENOUGH!" With two quick flicks of her wand, Helga silenced the men, and she had to bite her lip to keep from laughing when they turned to her with identical looks of outrage.

"Ro," she said to the woman hovering in the doorway, "take that one," a thrust of her chin indicated Godric, "and try to talk some sense into him. And if that doesn't work, use a cauldron. And you," she continued, wheeling on Salazar, who was smirking at his friend's fate, "are coming with me."

Without waiting to watch Rowena lead the still-silenced Godric out of the Hall, Helga marched over to Salazar, grabbed him by the beard, and dragged him out one of the other doors.

When they reached the small ante-chamber, Helga put her hands on her hips and looked sternly at her friend.

"Are you going to behave yourself, or am I going to have to leave that Silencing spell on you?"

Sal held up his hands, clearly protesting his innocence.

"I don't care who started it," Helga countered. "I just want it to stop! You and 'ric have been at it for days and you're driving the rest of us barmy! The elves are about ready to fly to pieces, Ro has started taking her meals in her room, and poor Aelbrec is so distracted that he accidentally dug up a row of cabbages he planted last week, thinking they were weeds! We have a fortnight before the students arrive and we still need to make some decisions."

She gave him a long stare, and eventually he dropped his eyes and sighed.

"Look, I know you and Godric enjoy arguing, and that's fine. But can you please limit yourselves to just a few hours a day? So that we can actually get some work done?"

Salazar nodded, and even looked somewhat sheepish. Helga smiled brightly. "Good. Now let's go see if Ro has knocked some sense into 'ric."

She turned to go back to the Hall, but a tug on her sleeve stopped her. Salazar gestured to his mouth with a questioning look.

Helga grinned wickedly. "Oh no. I think I'll leave those spells on for a while longer. We might have a more productive staff meeting this way." And with a laugh she turned and ran, staying mere steps ahead of Salazar who immediately gave chase.
