"She's a what?"

"A vampire slayer."

"This little china doll? You're kidding, right? And wait, that means vampires exist?"

Giles sighed in frustration and ran a hand through his hair.

"Look, doctor, you've been to many different worlds, correct? And you've seen anatomies that most people couldn't comprehend? Your ship's own first officer has green blood, does he not?"

"So you're saying I should - "

"Just think of vampires as a humanoid race who's metabolism has been modified to take nutrients from blood rather than food, yes."

McCoy sighed. "Fine, but that still doesn't explain what they're doing on earth."

Giles smiled slightly. "Think of the Hellmouth as an intergalactic portal, allowing beings from many different planets to arrive here. It may even be true for all we know."

"Fine. I'm a doctor, not a priest. I don't try to understand where these demons come from. But what does all that have to do with her?" the doctor asked, indicating the small form stretched out on the couch in front of them.

"Buffy is, as I said, a vampire slayer. She's been gifted with skills above and beyond what a human would normally possess - increased strength, quickened reflexes, accelerated healing, the usual things. She was in a fight two days ago and was hit with a beam of - something. Her own healing does not seem to be enough in this case. It is my hope that your advanced medicine will be - or can at least tell us what is wrong with her." Giles looked at the other man beseechingly. "Please, doctor, we need her more than you could possibly know. And right now she needs you."

McCoy took a deep breath and let it out slowly. "Alright, let's see what we can find," he agreed, and knelt beside the prone girl.

Giles let out a sigh of relief. Now, at least, there was a chance.

The sound of swearing floated in from the other room, and Spock resisted the urge to sigh. To do so would be illogical, of course, as it would change nothing, but it was in times like these that she finally understood her mother's predilection for the act. Instead, she set aside the PADD she was reading and proceeded through the open door.

"You do realize," she said as she entered, "that the energy you spend on invectives could more constructively be spent on completing the exercises that the doctor has set forth for you?"

The man in question said nothing but continued to attempt to unbuckle the weights that were attached to his ankles.

Spock again resisted the urge to sigh and knelt down on the floor. She laid her hand over his fumbling ones.

"Chris, stop," she commanded gently, and deftly undid the weights.

Chris Pike breathed a sigh of relief and looked down fondly at the woman sitting in front of him. He cupped a hand on her cheek. "Thank you, love."

"If you would allow me to help you, as Doctor Jones suggested, your progress would be 21% faster," replied Spock, but even as she reprimanded him, she took his other hand in her own.

Chris sighed. "I know, I know. But I need to do this myself, so that I don't feel quite so . . . impotent."

Spock raised one eyebrow. "Have I ever given you any indication that your sexual performance is less than satisfactory?"

"You know very well what I mean," he scowled through his blush.

"I believe a reminder is in order," Spock said as she rose. Her eyes seemed to grow bright, with what might be called (in anyone else) mirth, and she led her husband towards their bedroom.

"Elizabeth Lenora McCoy! Get your ass out here before I come in there for you!"

The CMO of the Enterprise, more commonly known as Bones, winced from her seat in her office, where she was barricaded behind a mountain of PADDs. There were exactly two people on the ship who could get away with using her full name. The voice shouting was distinctly male, so clearly it was not her best friend and head nurse, Christine Chapel.

With a sigh, she rose and calmly made her way into the main area of Sickbay, affixing a scowl firmly on her face.

"Captain James Tiberius Kirk. And just what did I do to deserve the honor of you screaming like a banshee in my Sickbay?"

Undeterred, the captain of the flagship of the Federation grinned broadly at her and continued bouncing on the balls of his feet, like a small child on Christmas.

"Come one, Bones, you've got to see this!" he said grabbing her hand and tugging her towards the door.

McCoy threw a pleading look over her shoulder, but none of her nurses seemed willing to come to her rescue.

She allowed herself to be led to the lift, where Kirk manually inputted the destination rather than using the normal voice-activated computer. Then he began whistling - off-key, as he always did when he was inordinately proud of himself. McCoy rolled her eyes and huffed but did not comment; it would only encourage him.

"Computer, halt lift," Kirk suddenly ordered. Before she could question him, she felt a soft piece of cloth slip around her face as a blindfold.

"What-?"

"Shhh," he ordered, his breath warm on her ear. "Computer, resume."

She felt the lift move under her again but the blackness was beginning to close in on her. It took all of her self-control not to claw the blindfold off, and just when she thought she couldn't stand it any more, the familiar weight of Kirk's hand on her shoulder steadied her.

She felt herself being gently led off the lift and then she felt the blindfold slacken. She blinked several times, but the scene before her didn't change.

They were in the observation deck, she was sure, but it had been transformed into a moonlit glade. In one corner was a candle-lit dinner, table and chairs cleverly disguised as tree stumps. Trees and Spanish moss were everywhere, and the faint sounds of crickets and frogs was overlaid by softly playing music.

She turned to Kirk, who was standing with an uncharacteristically shy expression on his boyish face.

"Jim?"

"Do you like it, Len?"

"You know I do, but - but - why?"

He kissed her softly, and led her over to the table. "Since I can't take you home, I thought I'd bring some home to you. Happy anniversary, love."
